Project Info

Objective: United Airlines hired Billups Design to analyze current home page usability and layout and make recommendations for improvements. With over 2 million visitors per day, even slight changes in usability can make big differences in customer experience and expectations.

Solution: Billups Design explored the home page from top to bottom, with special focus on combining Fare finder, EasyCheck-in and Flight status in a layered widget - something that was considered early adoption at the time with the big .coms. To test our ideas, wireframes, creative, etc. we performed home page usability testing which consisted of clickable creative comps for on-site user interaction, video recorded and disseminated to key decision-makers on the user-experience board and project team. Once the Specifications were written our design, development and project management teams were able to identify the safest and best approach to implementation.

Results: Less clutter, quicker access to high-traffic areas: fares, check-in, flight status and news/deals. The results were elegant and they were proven to accommodate users from the usability testing and positive post-launch feedback. The layout and element architecture devised are still in use 6 years later.
